Remember When Wednesday

I am still fairly new to the blog world, but I noticed quickly that for almost any day of the week there is a theme you can use. I have not seen this yet, but I am sure it is out there somewhere. I have decided to start Remember When Wednesday and spend some time reflecting on the "Good Ole Days".

The first one is for the Dr.

1. Remember when the best water in the whole world came from straight from the water hose. Sometimes you were so thirsty you could not wait for the warm water that was sitting in the hose to run out first.

2. How about before the ATM/Pulse machine. You went to the bank drive through on Friday afternoon and they gave out the mini rolls of Lifesavers. If you did not get to the bank before the weekend, you had to make due with no money.

3. Sunday nights were all about the Wonderful World of Walt Disney followed by Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.

4. Life was not fair, you got your feelings hurt, you did not always win. You got knocked down and you learned how to stand back up again. We were better people (in most cases) for have a few hard knocks along the way.

5. When a thong was a shoe not underwear!

Hope you enjoy and feel free to add your own memories in the comments section.

  1. 1. The hot water was the water that always tasted rubbery.
    2. We used to ride our bikes thru the bank drive-thru and the lady at the window would give us those little suckers with the loop handles. Do they even make those anymore?
    3. I know you did not just bring up Wild Kingdom! I loved it when Marlin would say something like..."While I held the gun, Jim moved in the secure the angry lion in the net". Jim was 'da man!
    4. Back when I played Little League baseball, every kid didn't play every game. The coach played the best players he had and tried to WIN. That meant someone had to LOSE. If your kid didn't get to play very often, you got out in the yard with him after work and played catch or helped him with his batting or whatever it took for him to improve enough to be able to play. Otherwise, he was doomed to be "hugging the pine" untilthe season was over or a game got so lopsided that his poor playing wouldn't affect the outcome.
    5. We've never called them thongs. They were always called flip-flops for as long as I can remember.

    I think I may like this Remember When Wednesday thing. I'll be thinking of something to add for next week.

  3. Don't forget that the winning team got to ride in the back of someone's truck to get ice cream at Dairy Queen!

  4. I think it is funny that you mention the bank when money has become so conceptual anyways...

    I really appreciate #4, Matt and I talk a lot about our students being so afraid of failure that it is definitely a fault of our educational and societal system. Then, to top it off, they are so convinced that failure doesn't mean anything that they don't try to change any behavior to fix it. Mattie is convinced that he will only enroll our kids in sports where not everyone gets a trophy. We want our kids to fail and realize that what happens after you fail is what is important.

  6. I grew up in a very small East Texas town. Someone in town knew you were about to do something bad even before you did.

  7. 1) Just as your stubbed toe healed from playing outside with no shoes, you stubbed it again, but you didn't really care;
    2) You walked to the local store;
    3) You had rock fights which seemed pretty cool until someone actually got hit;
    4) You spent all day building a damn at the local creek.
    5) You waited for the construction workers that were building the homes to leave so that you could scavange the site and climb on their stuff;
    6) It was time to go home when the street lights came on;
    7) Black light posters were cool.
